Can You Make Money From Yuwie?

I’ve got a MySpace and Facebook account that I started but can’t even remember the logins to anymore. I get several emails from old colleagues and friends inviting me to get LinkedIn to their network which I ignore. You could label me as an anti-social networker.

This was until recently when I stumbled across a web site called Yuwie which peaked my curiosity. Yuwie is a new social networking website similar to MySpace that started in May 2007. The twist with Yuwie is that they share a portion of their ad revenue with you. You get paid to do everything that you would normally do on other social networking websites. This includes: blogging, uploading, pictures and videos, sending messages, surfing, referrals and referral activity.

Yuwie could be categorized as an MLM (multi level marketing) as you are enticed to get others to join and in return you are rewarded with making money. For those people already involved in network marketing companies, you already have a leg up as you can promote Yuwie to all your down lines. However, the good thing about this MLM is that you are not out of pocket any money.Let me start by saying that I was not a big fan of the Yuwie sign-up or referral process. It shows a rather cheesy video which was a complete turn off but nevertheless I still joined to check out its potential. Maybe I am just a sucker for the get rich easy scheme.

I tried pimping a selective few of my friends (10 to be exact) to see what they thought. The ages of my friends ranged from 21 to 40 and none of them joined.  However, I did receive almost 50 requests to be somebody’s friend on the Yuwie network in the first couple of days.  So as advertised, Yuwie is very similar to MySpace!  Some of the requests seemed legit and some were people just trying to game the system to get more profile views so they could make $0.0005 cents.  I always get a kick out of the spammers on these social networks as well, “I saw your profile, think your cool, love what I’m seeing here, email me here”.  My profile is practically empty and I didn’t even post a picture yet!

How much can you make from Yuwie?

Here’s an example that Yuwie often uses. The chart below assumes you refer 3 people, and those 3 people refer 3, etc, all hey way through 10 levels, and each referral does 1000 page views for the month, and the month’s RSR (revenue sharing rate) is $0.50. Note: The month’s RSR will be different each month!

Level Referrals Page Views Commission % Paid Earnings Month’s

RSR of $0.50

You 1 1,000 10% $0.05
1 3 3,000 10% $0.15
2 9 9,000 10% $0.45
3 27 27,000 4% $0.54
4 81 81,000 4% $1.62
5 243 243,000 4% $4.86
6 729 729,000 4% $14.58
7 2,187 2,187,000 4% $43.74
8 6,561 6,561,000 10% $328.05
9 19,683 19,683,000 10% $984.15
10 59,049 59,049,000 30% $8,857.35
Total 88,572 88,573,000 100% $10,235.54
Earnings = Month’s RSR x ( Page Views / 1,000 ) x Commission

As you can see, Level 10 is the place to be but I know I will never get there.  Given that Yuwie only paid out about $8000 for around 17 million page views back in September 2007, I’m not sure how anyone ever reaches that 10K per month amount.

Where do I sign up?
Personally, I think you should find a friend to sign up under as they will be very thankful you did. Yuwie really advocates signing up using referrals.

Conclusion
I do like the concept of sharing the revenue with the member base although it does seem to attract people trying to game the system. I am curious to see is if the advertising model can sustain itself for Yuwie and their members,  Right now, the quality of ads shown on the network are not that great and I had read that they were banned from the Google Adsense program which is probably a huge hit to the RSR.

If you are looking for a new social network to possible make some new friends or promote yourself then Yuwie might be worth considering. However, if you are looking to make a quick buck, I doubt it will happen here unless you are seriously networked.
